To reduce the enormous backlog of criminal cases waiting to be heard Justice Secretary David Lammy wants to limit trial by jury to those cases which are punishable by a prison sentence in excess of three years. This will leave the Magistrates Courts to deal with those (many) cases where the maximum sentence is under three years - which David Lammy thinks will be dealt with fairly quickly and therefore considerably reduce the backlog and waiting times for 'victims'. This is a disastrous proposal - due to become law by the end of 2026. Magistrates are, in essence, pro-establishment. Riddled with prejudice. Juries are much, much fairer. There will be many miscarriages of justice under the auspices of a Magistrate if this Lammy law is enacted. The Daily Mail got it right! Read on.
